Achieving Thermal Solutions With ProCell EV Firewall

Achieving Thermal Solutions With ProCell EV Firewall

Electrification for vehicles has become a part of the automotive world. In addition, thermal propagation management for battery manufacturers and end users remains an important topic within the industry. As customer safety is paramount to the industry, Rogers Corporation develops materials to help maximize safety without having to minimize battery performance.

Rogers Corporation has developed thermal propagation protection with their Rogers ProCell EV Firewall product line. This combines multiple functionalities of vibration management, ideal curve behavior, and gap filling with thermal runaway protection in an all-in-one non-composite solution.

As a Rogers Preferred Converter, ABLE can help you access thermal solutions available in the Rogers ProCell EV Firewall product line. But before that, let’s take a look at ProCell EV Firewall and its thermal runaway solutions.

What is the ProCell EV Firewall?

The ProCell product line aims to delay the thermal propagation in batteries. The materials in the Rogers ProCell EV Firewall product line can withstand very high temperatures and can stop thermal runaway in small-scale nail penetration testing.

These materials are offered in various thicknesses to better support cell-to-cell or module-to-module designs.

The ProCell EV Firewall line has the following benefits:

The ProCell EV Firewall Product Line

The Rogers ProCell EV Firewall product line has the following available products in its portfolio:

ProCell EV Firewall PCL-350 & 400

The ProCell PCL-350 and PCL-400 are silicone-filled elastomeric materials that may act as a compression battery pad and thermal propagation barrier within pouch or prismatic batteries in several markets or industries including marine, stationary, and electric vehicles, among others.

The materials showcase multifunctionality, which makes them ideal for cell-to-cell and module-to-module propagation protection. When exposed to intense heat, the materials have multiple mechanisms that, when activated, reduce thermal transmission through the material.

ProCell ProCell EV Firewall PCL-350 & 400 has the following features:

These materials also have the following benefits:

ProCell EV Firewall 800 & 801

The ProCell EV Firewall are tapes that are designed to delay the rising of temperatures between cells in batteries for portable battery packs, stationary, and EV/HEV, among others.

The ProCell 800 and 801 are thin and flexible aluminum foil-backed glass cloth composites. The materials provide temperature protection without adding bulk to the battery cell or rigidity. Furthermore, it can also be used as a stand-alone solution or be laminated to other compressible materials.

Additionally, the ProCell 800 is a silicone adhesive that’s supplied on a clear and easy-to-remove liner. On the other hand, the ProCell 801 has an acrylic adhesive that’s supplied on a blue poly liner.

The ProCell 800 and 801 have the following features:

Applications of the ProCell EV Firewall Line

The Rogers ProCell EV Firewall product line currently has two current applications, and they are as follows:

Thermal Propagation Protection

There is a need in the industry to find ways on how battery performance can be improved without compromising the safety of the consumers. As such, the ProCell product line is dedicated to thermal propagation protection for battery manufacturers and end users.

These materials combine multiple functionalities of ideal curve behavior, gap filling, and vibration management with thermal runaway protection in a non-composite, all-in-one solution. Specifically, the ProCell EV Firewall 300 series can withstand high temperatures with its multiple-step mechanism approach that dissipates heat and propagation of open flame. On the other hand, the ProCell EV Firewall 800 series is a multi-layer laminate that insulates and laminates. It blocks the transmission of particles that might be present when a battery cell fails.

Thermal Solutions

Rogers Corporation produces thermal solutions that protect critical systems and electronics. The company has several other product lines dedicated to thermal solutions, but the ProCell product line focuses on temperature protection.

The materials are ultra-thin, lightweight, and have an easily processed composite design for custom solutions across different battery pack designs that can contribute to thermal runaway delay.
